How To Make a Wine Slushie

Wine slushies are literally the perfect refreshing beverage to help you cool off in summer. Featuring delicious wine, fruit, and ice, wine slushies are a nostalgic drink with an alcoholic twist.

In this article, I explore how to make a wine slushie at home and provide you with some inspiration for a few delicious recipes you can try to make this summer.

So, let’s get started.

Slushies are nostalgic, refreshing drinks that remind me of being a kid. However, wine slushies have become increasingly popular over the years as an alcoholic alternative.

The best thing to love about wine slushies is how versatile they are. The basic recipe contains wine of your choice, fruit of your choice, and ice! However, there are different variations of this which include freezing the wine or fruit for a stronger slushie.

Below are a few of my favorite wine slushie recipes for the summer!

A guide on how to make a watermelon wine slushie

Watermelon wine slushie

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup of white wine of your choice
  • 1 1/2 cups of cubed watermelon, frozen (add extra ice if watermelon is not frozen)
  • 1/2–2/3 cups of ice, start with 1/2 cup and add in more if you want it to be a thicker consistency
  • 2 teaspoons of agave nectar, plus more if you want it to taste sweeter (maple syrup or honey also work)

Instructions

  • Start by gathering and measuring out your ingredients.
  • Next, add the wine, watermelon, and ice to a high speed blender.
  • Blend until the mixture has a smooth consistency.
  • If the slushie isn’t as thick as you’d like it, add in additional ice until you have the desired consistency.
  • Taste and add in agave nectar to sweeten to your taste. While I usually add 2 teaspoons of agave nectar, you might want to add in more or less depending on your preference.
  • Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • For a creamier texture, freeze your watermelon ahead of time. This creates the perfect consistency and a stronger slushie as it means you have to add less ice!
  • Blend everything together without sweetening the slushie. Give it a taste and then add in some agave, maple syrup, or honey if you think it needs to be a bit sweeter. You can always add more, but you can’t take away sweetness!
  • Freeze any leftovers you have and place them into an ice tray. Simply throw them into a blender with some water or wine when you’re ready for another slushie!

A guide on how to make a triple berry red wine slushie

Triple berry red wine slushie

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup of red wine
  • 1 1/2 cups of mixed berries, frozen
  • 1/2–2/3 cups of ice, start with 1/2 cup and add in more if you want it to be a thicker consistency
  • 3-4 tablespoons of ginger ale
  • 2 teaspoons of simple syrup

Instructions

  • Measure out your ingredients.
  • Place the red wine, mixed berries, ginger ale, and simple syrup in a large blender.
  • Blend until the mixture is well combined.
  • Red wine can be quite bitter. At this point, have a taste and add more sugar syrup until it is your desired level of sweetness.

Notes

  • Any mixed berry mix works. The one I use is a mixture of blackberries, strawberries, and blueberries.
  • If you don’t have simple syrup, you can make your own by simply boiling water and granulated sugar together. If you’d prefer a substitute, agave nectar will also work to sweeten this wine slushie.

A guide on how to make frosé (frozen rosé)

Frosé

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup of rosé
  • 1 1/2 cups of strawberries, hulled and halved
  • ¼ cup of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of lemon juice

Instructions

  • Pour the rosé into a freezer container and freeze it overnight.
  • The following day, gather all the ingredients together.
  • Next, hull and halve the strawberries. Then mix the sugar with the strawberries and allow them to sit for 30 minutes or until the strawberries have begun to release their juices.
  • Add the frozen rosé, strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice to the blender. Blend until the mixture is smooth.
  • Serve and enjoy immediately!

Notes

Preparation is key. Make sure that you plan beforehand when you want to make frosé. Add the rosé to the freezer the day before and freeze it overnight to achieve the right consistency and flavors for your wine slushie.

How do you make simple syrup for wine slushies?

If you can boil water, then you can very easily make simple syrup.

Simple syrup

Ingredients

  • ½ cup of granulated sugar.
  • ½ cup of water.

Instructions

  • Start by adding the sugar and water to a small saucepan over a medium heat, making sure that you are stirring the mixture constantly.
  • Stir the mixture until all of the sugar has dissolved.
  • Allow the mixture to cool, then pour into a jar or a container with a tight lid.
  • Store in the refrigerator. Simple syrup will keep in the refrigerator for about a month to add to a variety of different drinks, including your wine slushie recipes!

How to make a Calimocho?

Ingredients:

  • 1 l of Coke
  • 1 l of cheap red wine
  • 1 l of crushed ice
  • sliced lemon or orange

Instructions:

  • Fill a bowl with the crushed ice and slowly add the red wine and coke.
  • Stir the contents of the bowl
  • Fill the mixture into large glass and use the lemon or orange slice for decoration

Calimocho is also called Kalimotxo or Corea (Cola / red wine) depending on where you live. You can also make a white Calimocho by replacing the coke with lemonade and the red wine by white wine.

Can you make a wine slushie without ice?

The majority of wine slushies contain ice as one of the primary ingredients. However, you can make a wine slushie without ice. In fact, some people prefer it as ice can water down the alcohol flavor once it begins to melt.

If you don’t have ice on hand you can try freezing the bottle of wine beforehand to achieve a similar result. Additionally, you can also try freezing the fruit that you are using, as this will produce a thicker, colder consistency than standard fruit.

In the cherry frosé recipe that I mentioned above, you do not need ice for this reason. The wine will freeze, producing a similar slushie consistency.

Once you have blended the frozen mango and wine with the rest of the ingredients in the recipe, you won’t be able to tell that you didn’t add any additional ice! The same applies to using frozen fruit.
