Can You Drink Wine on Keto?

If you are following a keto diet, you will need to be careful with the types of food you are eating. This is because you will want to ensure you are able to prevent your body from stopping the state of ketosis.

As a result of this, it is only natural to wonder what food and drinks are suitable to consume. If you enjoy a glass or two of wine, you may want to know if it is safe to drink.

You will be happy to know that in certain cases it is okay to drink wine and still follow a keto diet. In this article, we will be chatting you through everything you need to know about wine and a keto diet.

What is a keto diet?

A keto diet is a type of diet that requires you to change the way you think about food. It involves eating to a very specific diet plan. This diet plan then forces your body to enter a state of ketosis. This is why it is called the keto diet.

If you are unaware of what ketosis is, it makes the person’s body use different types of fuel to keep the body running.

On a keto diet, you will not eat certain food groups, such as carbohydrates, and sugar. Instead of having to rely on these types of foods for energy, a person will eat more fat and protein instead.

The type of diet focuses on the ketone bodies that are found in the liver that is created as a result of stored fat.

This is then used to fuel the body. While it is a type of diet that does restrict you somewhat in the food and drinks you can consume, there are many things you are able to have.

Can you drink wine on keto?

Yes, you can drink wine on a keto diet. However, there are a few different aspects that you will need to take into consideration. The main point to note is the amount of sugar and carbohydrates that are in the wine.

If the wine is quite high in sugars or carbohydrates, then it is not a suitable option to consume. This is because a keto diet does not involve these two food groups.

Given this, you will want to choose a type of wine that is suitable instead.

Thankfully, there are a good range of wine options available for you to choose from. What is great about wine in comparison to many other types of alcohol is that it often does not contain a lot of carbohydrates. As a result it can be consumed.

However, this is not to say that you should overly drink it. The wine should still be consumed in moderation when following a keto diet.

In addition to this, it is important to remember that some wines are higher in carbohydrates than others, and would not be suitable for you.

The best types of wine to consume are those with a lower alcohol percentage. The lower the percentage is, the better the wine will be to consume.

Ideally the wine should be 12% or under. In addition to this, you will want to check the amount of residual sugar it contains.

There are many types of wine, such as white, red, rose, and even sherry. When choosing these wines, you will want to opt for the dry wines.

The dryer the wine is, the fewer carbohydrates it may contain. While these wines are stronger in their taste, they are still a fantastic option.

What wines are Keto friendly?

As we have mentioned, there are many types of wines you can drink. Before purchasing, we would recommend reading the bottle label before purchasing to ensure it has a lower alcohol percentage, and that it has as few carbs as possible.

There are a handful of typically keto-friendly options. Some of these include Chardonnay. This is a dry wine. It will typically be around 13% in its alcohol percentage. While it is slightly stronger, it contains less than 1 gram of carbs per 150 ml.

If you enjoy red wine, you may want to consider Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a very dry red wine from Chile.

It is full of flavor but is low in carbohydrates. Some other great choices for red wine include, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. Again these are dryer wines that are low in carbohydrates.

If white wine is your preference, again, you will need to choose a dry type. In the same vein as red wine, there are keto-friendly white wines available, such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling.

If you prefer your wine with a fizz, or if you are celebrating a special occasion, you do not have to miss out. Champagne is a fantastic dry bubbly white wine that is tasty, and very low in carbohydrates.

While it can be difficult to know how much residual sugar is too much, you just need to remember that anything below 39 grams of sugar is safe to drink.

Anything that is above this will not really be a dry wine, and can interfere with a keto diet. As a result of this, we would avoid these types of wine.

Summary

We hope you have found this article useful. As you can see, being on a keto diet does not mean that you cannot enjoy certain types of drinks. You can still keep up with your keto diet and still treat yourself to a glass of dry wine here and there, especially if you are celebrating an occasion.

The most important things to remember is to check the alcohol percentage and the dryness of the wine. The less sugar it contains the better, as this is what will interfere with a keto diet.

As with any type of treat, we would recommend that you consume wine in moderation while on a keto diet, but you can treat yourself to a glass – or two!
